Sunday Jazz at Whighams

Our famed jazz club was started back in March 2009 by two friends – local jazz musician Kevin Dorrian and jazz enthusiast Graeme Knox, regularly welcoming a crowd that reaches well into three figures every week. It has become one of the leading weekly jazz club’s in the UK – continually attracting some of the biggest names in jazz from around Scotland, the rest of the UK and Internationally.  We’ve featured a raft of styles from the ‘Golden Age’ jazz of the early 20th century, Dixieland, Gypsy Jazz, West Coast, Be-Bop and of course some fantastic re-workings of The Great American Songbook.

A £5 cover charge per person is applicable for Jazz performances.  This insures we can continue to support live music on a weekly basis.
All times 7-9:15 unless otherwise stated.

January 26

11th

Alan Laing Quarter

We usher in 2026 with local legendary crooner Alan Laing – an ever-present on the burgeoning 1960s Edinburgh ‘beat’ scene and still active today in the revival of local pop legends Fayne & The Cruisers. Alan, however, honed his craft paying homage to the greatest Singers ever to stand in front of a microphone – Sinatra, Tormé, Bennett to name a few, so he’s more than earned his ‘jazz spurs’. Last time he was at Whighams it was a highly popular night – expect more of the same this evening – Alan will be backed by Campbell Normand (piano), Eric Wales ( bass) and Aldo Morrow (drums)

Jazz Main

JazzMain’s music is a heady mix drawn mostly from the vast Blue Note Records’ canon and other innovative recording houses that made the 1950s and 60s arguably the most important and influential decades of jazz recordings.  The band bring a fresh, invigorating perspective to some of the well-known and lesser performed works by the likes of Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Clifford Brown, Hank Mobley, Dizzy Gillespie and many more. This band is highly popular, so expect this evening to be a busy one!

Nick Gould leads this punchy tenor sax-led foursome – together with Steve Grossart (keys), Iain Harkness (electric 5-string bass) and Kevin Dorrian (drums)

25th

Rikki Abbott & the Disciples of Bop

A debut for this superb band brimming full of jazz/fusion/soul & funk. Led by the trumpet/flugel man Rikki Abbott and featuring some of Edinburgh’s finest jazz musicians – this will be a great evening of tight, hard-driven music, that will be as lively as it is compelling
