Whighams would like to wish all it’s customers a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
Doddie’5 Red Blend
We are very excited to now have stock of ‘Doddie’5 Red Blend’ to enjoy at home or in Whighams!
Simon Halliday, co-founder of Sporting Wine Club, jumped at the chance to work with the Foundation and Kenny Logan of Logan Sports Marketing to kick off a unique fundraising initiative. Combining two of Doddie’s greatest passions – rugby and wine – the idea for ‘Doddie’5 Red Blend’ was born.
They approached Schalk Burger & Sons, a legendary Springbok family, and one of the leading Sporting Winemaker’s at the Sporting Wine Club, from their amazing Welbedacht Estate, in South Africa, to see if they could mix a traditional Bordeaux blend with 5 grape varieties, representing Doddie’s shirt. In imitable style, they have produced a real winner.
To top it all off, renowned mouth painter and former academy player at Saracens, Henry Fraser, has designed the label. A freak accident in 2009 left Henry paralysed from the shoulders down and he has since found a new path with his remarkable ‘mouth-painting’ artwork.
Our exceptional selection of fine wines are the perfect accompaniment to our delicious menus which includes a mouthwatering range of tapas as well as lunch and dinner and we will be delighted to advise you on wine pairing to accompany each dish.
We also offer a wide selection of beers and spirits, many of which are produced in Scotland.
Whighams Wine Celler is an out of the way, step-down, wine emporium at the west end of Rose Street…and in a class all it’s own. Just when you find yourself tired of the touristy “Pubs,” Whighams is an oenophiliac’s and gourmet’s oasis.
My wife and I happily stumbled upon Whighams, attracted by the sign noting “Wine”. We walked in to find a bright, modern, immaculately maintained eatery with a well-stocked surround bar, adventurous wine celler, and inviting menu. The staff was immediately attentive, professional, and extremely knowledable. While we had intended to merely “check the place out”, we soon were so enraptured in conversation with staff regarding food and wine, we just had to stay and imbibe. A good choice.
In two visits we ran the gamut of sharing boards, wine flights, Cullen skink, risotto, and several desserts (because you just have to). Every food choice, every recommended wine was perfection. Absolutely shere perfection!! On top of it all…they do music!! Local jazz!
Whighams was our sanctuary from the tourist din that Edinburgh can be. We visited regularly, and already anticipate our next visit when we return to Scotland. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
Love this place having been introduced to it by friends. Great quirky little seating areas as well as the wider bar area. Fabulous wine list and wide range of other alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Lovely bar snacks, great atmosphere, great staff. Superb place.
Popped in for lunch, quite busy, lovely atmosphere. There was live music. I had the most amazing oysters, followed by some bar snacks. Service good. I’ll definitely return when next in Edinburgh.
