Sunday Jazz at Whighams

Our famed jazz club was started back in March 2009 by two friends – local jazz musician Kevin Dorrian and jazz enthusiast Graeme Knox, regularly welcoming a crowd that reaches well into three figures every week. It has become one of the leading weekly jazz club’s in the UK – continually attracting some of the biggest names in jazz from around Scotland, the rest of the UK and Internationally.  We’ve featured a raft of styles from the ‘Golden Age’ jazz of the early 20th century, Dixieland, Gypsy Jazz, West Coast, Be-Bop and of course some fantastic re-workings of The Great American Songbook.

A £5 cover charge per person is applicable for Jazz performances.  This insures we can continue to support live music on a weekly basis.
All times 7-9:15 unless otherwise stated.

Dahna!

New York songstress Dahna is one of the hottest prospects performing on the current Scottish Jazz Scene. A tremendous vocalist with an immaculate and unerring sense of timing and rhythm, Dahna truly packs a punch as a singer who can wring every emotion for a song – whether it’s hard bop or a soulful ballad. Tonight, she’ll be backed by her usual quartet Don’t miss her!!

Stephen Duffy & his Quartet

The urbane, debonair, and sartorially marvellous Mr Duffy is a supreme jazz singer who lists so many of the greatest jazz vocalists – particularly Ella – as his heroes. His verve and swing match them all – He’s the consummate entertainer and one that will particularly delight the Whighams’ posse this evening.

Tenement Jazz Band

A resounding favourite at Whighams Jazz Club – “The Tenements” have been purveying their particular brand of Old School/New Orleans Jazz for some years now. Always busy – always difficult to pin them down, but we’ve done that tonight. You’ll love the easy-listening vibe of this great band which recalls the years of Prohibition and that ‘old time’ jazz music when it was the preserve of Deep South Louisiana.

17th

Bossa Trio

Fronted by Portuguese singer/guitarist, Sergio Prazares, Bossa Trio has kept the flame alight for authenticating that wonderful rhythmic sound of Brazil, bringing a shimmering and scintillating pulse to a myriad of Brazilian music. Indeed, the music transports you to the bustle of the Rio Carnival, the warmth of the Copacabana Beach and the intensity of the Favelas.

His stunning guitar and vocal (all sung in Portuguese), resonates beautifully with the majesty of Brazil’s colourful musical tradition. With Sergio, his regular Bossa Trio bandmates Nick Gould (tenor sax) and Kevin Dorrian (drums/percussion) bring extra vibrancy to the music.  Dreaming of Rio and The Copacabana? Tonight – Brazil come to you!
