Whighams Wine Celler is an out of the way, step-down, wine emporium at the west end of Rose Street…and in a class all it’s own. Just when you find yourself tired of the touristy “Pubs,” Whighams is an oenophiliac’s and gourmet’s oasis.
My wife and I happily stumbled upon Whighams, attracted by the sign noting “Wine”. We walked in to find a bright, modern, immaculately maintained eatery with a well-stocked surround bar, adventurous wine celler, and inviting menu. The staff was immediately attentive, professional, and extremely knowledable. While we had intended to merely “check the place out”, we soon were so enraptured in conversation with staff regarding food and wine, we just had to stay and imbibe. A good choice.
In two visits we ran the gamut of sharing boards, wine flights, Cullen skink, risotto, and several desserts (because you just have to). Every food choice, every recommended wine was perfection. Absolutely shere perfection!! On top of it all…they do music!! Local jazz!
Whighams was our sanctuary from the tourist din that Edinburgh can be. We visited regularly, and already anticipate our next visit when we return to Scotland. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.
